The Newlyweds (Bridge)
The first tale of Spook Road has been told by various people over the years. The story goes like this: A young newlywed couple was driving home when they found themselves heading down Spook Road. Their vehicle (a truck as we’ve heard), stalled on the bridge and wouldn’t start. After multiple attempts to fix the vehicle, the couple decided it would be best if the husband went to seek help. The wife agreed to stay in the vehicle while the husband walked down the road in search of aid. When the husband returned with a local resident, the truck was empty and the woman was never to be seen or heard from again.
Note: This story has been told for close to 100 years. The original source of the story is unknown.
Personal Accounts:
Bridge Symbols
During the late 80’s and through the 90’s, the two bridges on Spook Road were decorated with paintings of reverse crosses and pentagrams. There have been multiple eyewitness accounts of this. Although, every couple of years both bridges were freshly painted by the township, and the symbols covered, they would begin reappearing shortly after. Most people considered these symbols the work of small town teens curing their boredom through petty vandalism. That seems likely but no one have ever been seen painting the symbols. This went on for years!
Stopping Your Car Engine on the East Bridge
Some say that if you stop your vehicle on the east bridge and turn off the engine, you vehicle won’t start again. This is a tale that is commonly attached to many haunted bridges across the country. We’ve turned off vehicles multiple times over the years on both bridges and we’ve had no issues starting the car. We consider it debunked.
Pleasant Hill Cemetery
Pleasant Hill Cemetery is the one verified graveyard on Spook Road. There have been stories of unearthed caskets at Pleasant Hill Cemetery dating back to the 80’s and 90’s. This has been verified as true and we offer video proof on our explore page (please see the 1995 footage). After the early 2000’s the cemetery was cleaned up. The unearthed caskets have been removed and the grass is kept trimmed. These days it stands as your typical quiet, pleasant small town graveyard. We don’t recommend visiting it unless you have family buried there.
Personal Accounts
Wailing at Pleasant Hill Cemetery
In the summer of 1992, a father and son, new to the area, were driving west past Pleasant Hill Cemetery when they spotted headstones through a small opening the forest. Parking nearby, they made their way into the forest to observe what appeared to be a purposely hidden graveyard. The eerie cemetery was unmarked and road access had been removed. About 30 yards into the forest, the pair began seeing unearthed casket pieces scattered around the cemetery’s perimeter. After ten minutes of being there, the boy thought he heard a distant wailing sound. He asked his father to affirm and both stood still until the wailing grew loud enough for both to hear clearly. The wailing came from the ridge along the creek at back north side of the graveyard. The sound included multiple voices in unison, ranging from very high to low vocal registers and would swell from weeping to terror or anger. The father and son left the site as the sound continued. At the time, neither of them knew they were on what locals called Spook Road and standing in the infamous graveyard known as Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
Other Graveyard(s)
Multiple Sources have suggested there are three graveyards on Spook Road. We’ve driven and searched for years during all seasons trying to verify these claims. We’ve also used google satellite maps and other online tools without finding any evidence. The only verified graveyard is Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Unless someone brings us hard evidence of other cemeteries, we consider this myth debunked. If you have knowledge of more than one graveyard on Spook Road, we would love to hear from you.
The Occult
It’s been said by many that the Occult would meet in undisclosed locations on Spook Road. There are no other specifics further on this, but it often pops up in conversation when people are sharing stories of Spook Road. Although there is zero evidence of this, we thought it would be worth noting.
